What is Printmaking?

Printmaking is a traditional method of etching, carving, or transferring an artists original drawing into a structure such as wood, linoleum, silkscreen, or copper plates in order to make multiples. Blythe prefers printmaking over any other medium because of its derivative qualities, the opportunities to manipulate an image and disseminate ideas to larger audiences. Blythe Harmon earned their BFA in Printmaking at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.

Intaglio

Blythe uses the intaglio process to etch designs into copper plates. This creates a structured matrix to print many of their designs in different colors. They use these multiples to create detailed prints and collages.

Screen Printing

Screen printing creates a stencil within a silk screen that allows for ink to pass through. Blythe uses screen printing to make original prints, as well as soft sculptures, such as the Great Salt Lake Community plushes.

Letterpress

Letterpress was traditionally used to hand set and print led type. Blythe uses letterpress to create original designs, posters, cards and more.

Relief

Relief is a process of carving a design into wood or linoleum. The process removes negative space from the design, leaving the positive raised in the matrix where the ink sits on top, similar to a stamp. Blythe carves intricate details of nature, to emphasize their importance in the life cycle processes.

Lithography

Lithography is the practice of etching an original drawing on to stone in order to make multiple fine art prints with the same quality of the original.
